The best time to prune palm trees is when there is a clear reason to prune: dead fronds, broken fronds, seed pods, roofline contact, pool cage contact, driveway hazards, or storm-damaged material. Palm pruning should not be done simply because the crown looks full or because storm season is approaching. A healthy palm needs its green fronds.

Palm leaves can turn yellow for many reasons. Sometimes it is normal aging. Older lower fronds naturally yellow, brown, and drop as new growth develops. Other times, yellowing can point to watering problems, poor drainage, nutrient stress, pests, root damage, cold injury, over-pruning, or a deeper palm health issue.

Landscape lighting can make palms and oak trees look beautiful at night. Uplighting a live oak canopy or highlighting a palm trunk can add curb appeal, safety, and a polished outdoor feel. But poor lighting installation can hurt trees when wires, straps, screws, heat, trenching, or buried fixtures damage bark, roots, trunks, or the root flare.

A tree stump near a fence may seem harmless after the tree is gone. But it can still affect the yard in practical ways. Old roots may push near posts, the stump may attract insects or decay, fence repairs may become harder, and future landscaping may be limited. Whether you should remove it depends on the stump’s size, location, condition, and what you plan to do with that fence line.

Ball moss on an oak tree can worry homeowners because it often looks like clumps of gray-green growth attached to branches. It may make the tree look old, neglected, or unhealthy. But ball moss is not always the main problem. In many cases, it grows on weak, shaded, or interior branches that were already declining. The real question is whether the oak is healthy overall or whether ball moss is hiding deadwood, thinning, or storm-risk concerns.

Bumps on oak leaves, twigs, or small branches are often called galls. They can look strange, ugly, or alarming, especially when they appear suddenly. In many cases, oak galls are more of a cosmetic issue than a serious tree problem. But homeowners should still look at the whole tree before deciding everything is harmless.

Palm pups, also called offshoots or suckers, are small new palm shoots that grow from the base of certain palms. They can be normal for some palm types, but they are not always something homeowners should keep. A palm pup in the right place may become part of a fuller landscape. A pup growing against a trunk, walkway, pool deck, driveway, or house wall can become crowded, messy, or difficult to remove later.

Oak seedlings in the yard are usually not a crisis. They often appear after acorns drop, especially under mature oaks, near fence lines, in mulch beds, along driveways, or around patios. The real question is whether the seedling is growing in a place where a future oak tree would actually make sense.

Live oaks can drop a surprising number of leaves in spring, and that can worry homeowners who expect “evergreen” to mean “never messy.” In many cases, spring leaf drop is normal renewal. The tree is shedding older leaves as new growth appears. But if leaf drop comes with dead limbs, thinning canopy, black spots, mushrooms, trunk cracks, or branch dieback, it may point to a larger tree-health concern.

Spanish moss hanging from an oak tree can look beautiful, messy, or worrying depending on the yard. Many homeowners see heavy moss and assume the oak is being harmed. In most cases, Spanish moss is not the main threat to the tree. But heavy moss can hide dead limbs, make the canopy look darker, add visual weight, and make it harder to notice real oak problems before storms.
